Why no mirror

The paper contains no numbered theorem, lemma, proposition, or corollary asserting a computational result, and neither case identifies one. The opponent’s campaigning model introduces a public-opinion problem absent from the paper; it cannot provide the missing result to mirror.

What the mirror covers

No named computational results are available to anchor a mirror.

The case FOR (proponent)

The strongest honest case for a continuous mirror is that this paper offers no named computational result to anchor one. It contains no numbered theorem, lemma, corollary, or proposition asserting hardness, tractability, or another complexity result. Its main claims are historical and explanatory: ordoliberalism influenced parts of EMU’s design, but German policy during the crisis was driven more by pragmatism and national interests. Those claims are argued through historical analysis and cited literature, not by solving a computational problem.

One could invent a model in which policymakers have policy-preference types, mass measures their share of a population, and an intervention aims to change which policy is adopted. But that would pose a new aggregation or campaigning problem. The paper does not study a large interchangeable population, and its explanandum is the historical influence of ideas on government policy. I doubt the authors would recognize that invented problem as a continuous version of their own.

So there are no anchors, no per-anchor continuous problems, and no results to classify as tractable, hardness-transferring, or continuum-specifically hard. The scope of a grounded mirror covers none of the paper’s results. The weakness is decisive: a plausible continuum story about political preferences cannot supply the missing computational result.

The case AGAINST (opponent, writing after the proponent)

The paper does have no named computational result to mirror. That rules out a direct continuation of one of its theorems, and the proponent is right that the paper’s historical conclusions cannot themselves be turned into an LP.

That does not establish that every worthwhile computational mirror is absent. The paper discusses concrete choices among fiscal rules, debt mutualization, transfers, and crisis measures. It also describes ideas being used strategically in policy debates: the passage on banking union says public rhetoric became a “trap” that helped opponents obtain concessions. A plausible computational question would model citizens’ complete preferences over those policy options as types, with a rational mass \(\mu_t\) for each type, and ask how much targeted campaigning would be needed to change the policy selected under a specified electoral or parliamentary rule. That is a population continuization, and it yields a recognizable campaigning or robustness problem. Its answer could show whether a policy outcome is robust to small shifts in support.

This is the strongest counterexample I can offer, and it is weak at the mirror gate. The paper explains government and interstate bargaining, chiefly through national interests and elite decisions; it does not study mass opinion or electoral influence. The proposed model adds a public-opinion channel that the authors may not regard as their problem. So the proponent’s claim is too broad if it means the paper’s subject cannot motivate any continuous computational question. The paper still provides little basis for calling that question a continuous mirror of its results.

The adversarial triple: the proponent anchors on up to three named results; the opponent sees that case and must defeat every anchor; the judge decides which case convinced it. These are the pipeline’s own outputs, generated by tools/triple_run.py — no human edited them. The paper’s own text is not reproduced here beyond the quoted statement above.
